Carlos Páez Vilaró / Casapueblo

This mural by Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró is located on Policía Vieja Street, next to Sarandí St, in the Old Town of Montevideo. It was dedicated to the Uruguayan singer Lágrima Ríos. When you visit Punta del Este, make sure not to miss Casapueblo at Punta Ballena which was built by Carlos Páez Vilaró and is simply paradisiacal (last photo).

Punta del Este

At the beginning, it was an indigenous place. Later, it became a fishermen’s town. Its first name was Villa Ituzaingó but in 1907 it got its current name. Punta del Este is a peninsula which separates the Río de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean. It has a variety of beautiful beaches and I’ll be posting photos I took in different occasions. These photos were taken in 1994, if I’m not wrong. In the first one, we can see the Gorriti island. The second one was taken at La Mansa beach, in front of the island. The third one is a view of the port and finally, a detail of Carlos Páez Vilaró’s artworks at Casapueblo.

Buceo

This beach was named after a group of divers who tried to find treasures of a wrecked ship in 1752. In the following years, there were several historic events in the area such as the arrival of the British navy in an attempt to conquer the Río de la Plata and the defeat of the Spanish navy by the new-born navy of Buenos Aires. The Uruguay Yacht Club was open in 1939.
