They are a distinctive element of the riverside scene.

Montevideo. Old town. First day of the year.

Although this article was published by Página 12 three years ago, it seems to be up-to-date, in many ways. It makes a brief comparison between Montevideo and Buenos Aires and also refers to the corner of “Las Misiones”. The piece mentions that this is probably the only façade in the continent with green and cream majolicas, probably brought from England, and built following the style of Manchester’s pubs .

Montevideo. Ciudad vieja.

Gurvich Museum / Museo Gurvich

Lithuanian José Gurvich settled down in Montevideo with his family in 1932, escaping from the upcoming Nazi Europe. He became one of the most talented artists of Uruguay. I went to the Gurvich Museum but it was closed already. I’m sorry I missed a temporary exhibition about his artworks while living in New York. But if you happen to be in Montevideo, you can check this out until March, 24th. I’ll have to come back.

New Year’s Eve in Montevideo /Año Nuevo en Montevideo

I am back from a short break in Montevideo. What can I say; there’s no doubt that the Uruguayan side of the River Plate is cleaner and more beautiful than the Argentine. I went to the beach everyday and I really thought I was at the sea (Uruguayans usually refer to the river as the sea). The water was very green and you could see some small fish actually swimming around you. My favorite beach there is certainly Playa Honda.
With the arrival of the New Year I went to the "Rambla" (riverside) to see the fireworks.
